Christian Joy (7) Lord, You Hear My Voice (Psalm 5:1-12) 2026-11-01

Christian Joy (7) “Lord, You Hear My Voice” Psalm 5:1-12 When we read the Psalms, we encounter moments when the people's laments are “all of a sudden” turned into joy. The source of this strength is their relationship with God. Even when we know the way, however, following it can be difficult. This is because we may know what we should do but still fail to do it, or simply choose not to do it. Today, we will focus on three things within this relationship that make such a transformation possible. The first is in his words. In Psalm 22:1, the psalm writer cries out to the Lord in lament. As we see in verses 4–6, he earnestly seeks God, relying on His goodness and character. The Lord is one who responds when we cry out to Him, trusting in His goodness. The second is worship. In verse 7, the psalm writer says that, because of the abundance of God's love, he enters His house and worships Him. Worship has the power to bring us back to life even when we are close to death, because worship itself is life. The third, and most important, is prayer. As we see in verses 2–3, the psalm writer pours out his heart and deepest desires before God in prayer. As mentioned earlier, even when we know what we should do, we may still struggle to put it into practice. This is because prayer is the very heart of our relationship with God and the key to experiencing true joy in Him. In 1 Samuel 1, we read about the desperate prayer of a woman named Hannah. In deep anguish and grief, she weeps bitterly and earnestly prays to the Lord. What is especially noteworthy is verse 18. After receiving an answer while praying, Hannah goes on her way, eats, and her face is no longer downcast. Usually, even when our worries disappear for a moment during prayer, we often find ourselves thinking about them again afterward. But Hannah no longer worried because she truly believed that God had heard and answered her prayer. Also, unlike many other prophets, the prophet Habakkuk begins his book not by recording a revelation or message from God, but by expressing his own complaints and cries of anguish. However, Habakkuk chapter 3 begins with a prayer. In verses 16–18, we see a remarkable change in his response. He trembles before God's majesty and authority, yet declares that no matter what circumstances he faces, he will rejoice and be glad in the Lord. Luke 22:43–44 shows us what Jesus did before He was crucified. Jesus prayed earnestly with great anguish, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. Even Jesus, who is God Himself, the Creator of heaven and earth, prayed with such intensity. Then, in verse 45, we read that Jesus "rose” from prayer and began His journey toward the cross. Jesus did not try to overcome or resolve what lay ahead on the cross through His own strength. Instead, it was through prayer that He found the strength to rise and move forward. Jesus, who became fully human, personally showed us how prayer works. Prayer is the very foundation of our relationship with God and the strength that carries us through our moments of lament. Even when our circumstances remain unchanged and our problems do not go away, prayer can suddenly transform our hearts. Ultimately, prayer is the answer—the one thing we cannot do without. That is why we must make prayer a habit. In Luke 22:39, we see that even Jesus had the habit of praying regularly. Just as an athlete practices tens of thousands of times before finally scoring a goal when the opportunity comes, we, too, must continually pray and walk with the Lord as a daily habit. As we do so, the Lord grants each of us the heart and understanding that He desires us to have. Through prayer, God gives us the grace to change our hearts rather than simply providing answers to our problems. The sermon may be the centerpiece of worship, but true worship is only complete when we encounter the Lord through prayer. 1. In prayer, God transforms our lament into praise. Discussion Questions 1. Have you ever experienced a time, either recently or in the past, when you faced a worry or a season of lament that you could not overcome on your own, but found peace or joy in your heart by holding on to the Lord? If so, take some time to share that experience with one another. 2. The passage teaches us that prayer does not necessarily mean our circumstances will immediately change or our problems will disappear. Rather, through prayer, our hearts can suddenly be transformed, and God gives us the grace to change our direction. When you pray, do you tend to focus only on ‘finding solutions’ to your problems, or do you pray by ‘surrendering your own will and aligning yourself with the Lord's direction’? Take some time to reflect on your personal prayer habits and share openly with one another. Application Question Just as an athlete scores a goal through thousands of hours of practice, Jesus Himself made prayer a daily habit. What does your current prayer life look like? Think about one specific prayer habit you can put into practice in your daily life this coming week to walk closely with the Lord (for example, spending five minutes in prayer during your morning commute or offering a prayer of thanksgiving before going to bed). Decide on a practical habit and share it with one another.
